Continuity, Longevity, Reliability, Quality, Innovation
These traits define the Rick Smith and Jason Guss Golf Academy, one of America’s best. The Rick Smith and Jason Guss Golf Academy is the oldest, continuously operated and most highly acclaimed golf school in Michigan. Founded by Rick Smith and Henry Young, the Academy was established at Treetops in 1990 and has been under the expert guidance of Henry Young, Director of Instruction ever since.
From its inception, the over-riding philosophy of the Academy has been clear
communication, quality instruction and individualized attention. Regarding the latter, the Rick Smith Golf Academy is the only school in the nation to have a 2:1 student/teacher ratio in Golf Magazine’s first “Top 25″ ranking.
Continuity - Under the guidance of Henry Young since its inception.
Longevity - Established in 1990
Reliability - As new swing methods come and go, the same guiding principle of sound fundamentals tailored to each student, define the Academy’s approach now as in its first year of operation in 1990.
Quality - In Golf Magazine’s bi-annual “Top 25 Golf Schools in America”, the Rick Smith Golf Academy is one of few in America and the ONLY school in Michigan to receive the accolade 3 times. In one issue when the rankings were placed in order, the Rick Smith Golf Academy placed 7th ahead of notable schools lead by David Leadbetter, Hank Haney, Jim McLean and Butch Harmon. There are multiple factors in determining this award, but the major contributing factor is student feedback. We’re proud that our past students are our best marketing tool.
Innovation - This academy has long been revered in the golf industry as THE place to learn from the best. However, the world class instructors do not rest on their laurels. The academy continually reinvents itself with the game’s latest technology including TrackMan, V1 Software, TOMI Putting Systems and all of the games latest training aids.

Instruction will focus on the short game and full swing while improving each student’s overall knowledge of the game of golf. Our on course instruction is second to none as we cover common challenges that many face when they take their games from the range to the course. In 2013, we’ve structured the Ladies Golf School to give you the tools to make the greatest amount of improvement in the shortest amount of time.
Additionally, to better utilize your time while you’re here, the schedule has been adjusted to incorporate the on course portion during one continuous 2 1/2 hour block on the final day.

When The Tribute opened in 2002, it turned Otsego Club & Resort from one of northern Michigan’s oldest golf resorts into one of its most exciting. The thousand-acre property the course is built on is the same rugged Sturgeon River Valley terrain that flows away from the resort, beginning with downhill ski slopes, and continuing north through what has to be some of the most dramatic golfing ground this side of Arcadia Bluffs or Whistling Straits. In a word, The Tribute is stunning.
With terrain like this, you get big elevation changes, ravine crossings, blind shots – to use another word: excitement. Dramatic, but fair, also comes to mind. As with many great courses, the holes can sometimes look more intimidating than they really are, and this extreme terrain feeds that effect greatly. Breathe deep, think about each shot (the course guidebook comes in very handy), relax and enjoy yourself.
The dramatic No. 3, a 430 yard par-4 that drops over 100 feet from tee to green, is a prime example. It’s easy to get psyched out, but use all that downhill momentum to your advantage. Pick your spot…nice and easy…keep it in play…Challenging, yes, but never unfair. Fairways are generally wide and spacious, and greens are large and accepting, forgiving from at least one angle, so that short hitters can make their way around without frustration. Like the Otsego Resort itself, this course is designed for maximum enjoyment. You are out there to have a good time, reveling in nature, on a truly special golf course.
The course took eight years to build, and during that time Otsego’s owner Keith Gornick and course designer Gary Koch (of NBC-TV golf announcing fame) both lost their fathers. At that point, the course was christened “The Tribute” in honor of both men, and a plaque on the first tee describes how the course is a tribute to the fathers and to “the love of the land and the game of golf that they imparted to their sons.”
How cool is that? Reading the plaque gave me shivers, and it set the tone for revelatory day on the links, remembering how my own father started me out in golf, and about what a great sport it is, especially when played in a dramatic natural setting like this.
Looking for a challenge? There are four sets of tees to choose from, stretching to 7,347-yards at the tips. The par-3 ninth plays 240 yards from the back tees, and the carry over a big marshland makes it feel even longer. At this point you’re so far out in the wilderness that you feel eyes peering at you from the forest as you make the turn back towards civilization.
This is one of those courses you just have to see to believe. The Otsego ski hill is for club members only, so being able to golf the property gives you a sense of entitlement. It’s a place you really feel privileged to set foot on the first tee. 18 beautiful holes and seven miles of cart paths later, you may just have rediscovered your own love of the land, and how well it can be utilized to bring challenge and excitement to the game of golf.

Join us for the 42nd running of this exciting, summer-ending event. You will experience Mackinac Island in one of the oldest and most scenic races in Michigan.
The Island is a unique destination that can only be reached by ferry. Step back in time to a bygone era where travel is done by foot, bicycle, carriage or horse. With over 2,000 runners and walkers, this is definitely a race you and your family will never forget!
8 Mile Run and Walk
The Start Line is located in front of Mission Point Resort, and the course will follow the perimeter of Mackinac Island in a clock-wise direction. The first mile of the race will travel past Victorian homes, the boat harbor and a myriad of shops and hotels in downtown Mackinac Island. Once through town, the route follows the shoreline of the Straits of Mackinac featuring breathtaking views of the Mackinac Bridge, neighboring islands and historic rock formations, finishing at waters edge on the lawn of Mission Point. This course is fast and flat but the scenery is so beautiful, you may just decide to relax and enjoy! The Finish Line is located along the shores in the park out front of Mission Point Resort.

Alpenfrost celebrates the heart of the Winter season in the Alpine Village.
For several years, Gaylord celebrated a Winterfest event, spearheaded by local business-men Jim Lappan and Dave Baragrey, that included an ice fishing derby, ice and snow sculpture events, kids games, contests and more.
Alpenfrost, a term coined by committee member Cindy Akans, is a rebirth and evolution of this exciting winter celebration in downtown Gaylord, combining anchor events such as The Polar Plunge and a Craft Beer and Wine Festival at Treetops Resort, with a flurry of downtown activities, games and merchant sales. Worthy of vintage Norman Rock-well painting, the Alpine Village will unveil an open-air ice skating rink on the Courthouse lawn during Alpenfrost.
As with Alpenfest, a unique annual Alpenfrost pin will be available that will offer pin wearers special discounts throughout the event. It’s about Winter, adventure, and having fun in the Alpine Village.
